5 things to think about before building a new house

If you’ve completed a building project in the past, you’ll understand that the process is far from straightforward. There are many aspects to consider when building a new house. If you’re completely new to it, we’ve made a list of a few things to think about before building a new house.

  1. Surrounding areas- it’s important to check the zoning areas of undeveloped property. Agricultural land is better turned residential. Industrial land is rarely used as housing land. If the surrounding area is likely to turn commercial, this could affect the resale value of your property.

  2. Traffic Patterns- Bear in mind that wherever you build will change in the future. If it’s a quiet area now, consider if there is possibility of other houses or roads being built around that area and how this could affect you.

  3. Build with the resale in mind- If you’re building your ‘forever’ home, don’t dismiss the fact that it might not be your last. Be mindful of its resale value and ask yourself if the features you’re giving it will have the same appeal to future buyers.

  4. Think Green! In today’s day and age it’s more important than ever to take steps to making your house more energy efficient- not only for the environment but for your bank account too! Ask your builder to make sure your windows are facing South, where you can get as much light and heat into your home as possible. We all know that the UK can get a bit chilly, so invest in high quality insulating materials and energy efficient appliances which in the long run, can save you money.

  5. Hire the right people- Building a house is a major project and one that you want to get right first time. If you’ve had no experience with building a property before, hiring people that are knowledgeable, trustworthy and have had good reviews from other customers could be the difference between your project taking one year to taking five. Additionally, hiring someone who understands your vision for the house and can work hard to make it happen is a quality to look out for.
