Preparing your home for an extension

Making the decision to extend your home is one that requires meticulous planning and preparation.

There are many factors to consider when preparing for an extension, particularly if you’re moving a room pivotal to the functionality of your house, such as a kitchen or living room.

Clear out

One of the first things you should do is to have a clear-out of the rooms that adjoin the extension area. The last thing you want is for you and your contractors to be surrounded by clutter when clear access to the extension is needed. Moving furniture and removing items that you no longer need is a great step in ensuring that this isn’t the case and that there is a clear pathway for those working on the project.

Plan ahead of time

If extending your home is causing disruption to an important area of the house (i.e a kitchen), consider making plans for how you will get around this prior to the building work commencing. Have you got a dining room that could temporarily house your crockery, utensils and pans?

Planning ahead of time is key in avoiding any difficulty when the project starts.

Organisation is key

Next, you should organise your belongings. Emptying an important room in the house might mean that items get misplaced. Organise the rooms affected by the extension so that when the project starts, you won’t have difficulty finding items that you need.

Inform your neighbours

We all know how exciting making renovations to a house is, but your neighbours might not have the same point of view. Consider informing them about the project and how long the work will last so that they are fully prepared for the noise when it happens.
