Exeter Cathedral
Exeter Cathedral dates back to the mid-1200s and, as such, has been an important landmark in the city for centuries. This astonishing cathedral has remained in its current form for at least 600 years – apart from some light maintenance work. The structure features a stunning stain glass window, vaulted ceiling and stone sculptures that date back to the 1300s.
The Guildhall
The Exeter Guildhall is one of the oldest continually used civic buildings in England. Remaining the civic centre of the city, the Guildhall has been a hub of the city since at least the 14th century, however, some parts of the building even date back to 1160.
The ‘House That Moved’
The so-called ‘House That Moved’ is one of the oldest timber-framed buildings in Devonshire. The iconic building has floors which jut out over the one below and it was likely built anywhere between the 14th and 16th centuries. The building is named ‘The House That Moved’ because it was under threat of destruction during the 1950s to make way for a new road but was saved by a group of historians who campaigned to have it saved. To protect the house, the council moved the entire building 70m away from it’s original local to West Street.
St Nicholas Priory
St Nicholas Priory is the oldest building in Exeter, with almost 1,000 years of history. The medieval priory was home to a group of Benedictine monks who would worship, study and serve the poor from the location for hundreds of years. Although only sections of the structure remain standing, it is still one of the most stunning examples of medieval architecture in the city.
