Four Amazing Feats of Architecture in London

The Uk’s capital has an impressive architectural legacy and is home to buildings spanning back over 1,000 years. From the many famous Blue Plaque houses to tourist sites like Big Ben or the London Eye, there’s plenty to see and do for all tastes. Visitors to London really are spoilt for choice and it’s tough to narrow down the city’s many amazing feats of architecture, but see below for just four of our favourites.

The Gherkin

This structure from English architect Norman Foster was ridiculed when first announced, but it’s since gone on to become one of London’s most recognisable contemporary landmarks. Standing an impressive 180 metres tall, the Gherkin is constructed of a steel frame and glass facade and the distinctive pattern is a result of the building’s energy-saving system.

St Pancras

The iconic station and hotel were designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1868 and his grandson, Giles Gilbert Scott, went on to design another famous London attraction – the Tate Modern. The building’s design is modelled on that of a cathedral and the station is open 24 hours a day.

The Shard

Designed by Renzo Piano (Italian architect of the Pompidou Centre and Potsdamer Platz), The Shard is the tallest building in the UK. Standing at just under 310 metres, it has 96 floors and houses offices, restaurants, residential flats and a viewing gallery. It’s eco-friendly too – 95% of The Shard’s construction materials are recycled.

St Paul’s Cathedral

Construction of St Paul’s begun in 1669 and it’s considered acclaimed architect Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. The iconic dome takes inspiration from St Peter’s Basilica in Rome and visitors can enjoy stunning 360 degree views of London from the dome’s viewing gallery.
